Star WA and Australian allrounder Cameron Green has scored his first Test century in Australia in the opening match of the NRMA Insurance Test Series against Bangladesh in Darwin.
Green Notches First Test Century In Australia
Green strode to the crease in Australia’s second innings with his side struggling at 3-73, still 155 runs behind the visitors.
The 27-year-old received a slice of good fortune early in his innings when he inside edged a delivery from Taskin Ahmed that glanced leg stump without removing the bail.
Green was able to work his way to 43 at the close of play on day three, with Australia’s hopes of winning the match largely resting on his shoulders.
Australia was still 50 runs behind with just five wickets remaining when Green moved to his half-century with a stylish straight drive early on day four.
While Green showed tremendous patience and application during his innings, his power was on full display when pulling a short ball from Taskin for six to move to 95.
He moved to the well-deserved century soon after with a push through mid-wicket for two runs.
There was a slight scare for Green when he turned to complete his 100th run, stumbling slightly at the non-strikers end as his batting partner Nathan Lyon also had to scramble to make his ground.
The outstanding knock, which came to an end on 104, was the first time Green reached three figures since the first Test Match against New Zealand in Wellington in 2024.
His other century came against India in Ahmedabad in a year earlier.
Green said he felt a mix of emotions in reaching the milestone for the first time on home soil, given Bangladesh went on to win the match by nine wickets.
“That’s the thing about cricket, you get judged heavily on results,” Green told cricket.com.au post-game.
“I walked off (after the first innings) and, even though it was a low score, pretty happy with how I felt out there.
“We hoped to maybe put 50 more (runs) on and potentially the game is potentially 50-50 with our bowlers.”
The second match of the series commences at Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay on Saturday at 8am WST.
