Busselton-Margaret River, Peel the Toast of CSBP Senior Country Weeks

The very best of regional Western Australian cricket was on display this week as CSBP Men’s and Women’s Country Weeks wrapped up in Perth, with Busselton-Margaret River and Peel Blue emerging as respective A-Section champions after two outstanding carnivals at the WACA Ground and venues across the city.

WA’s most prestigious regional cricket tournament has concluded with Busselton-Margaret River and Peel Blue emerging as winners of the A-section CSBP Men’s and Women’s Country Week competitions, respectively.

Busselton-Margaret River celebrated their A-section triumph after overcoming Albany and Districts Cricket Association by 42 runs in the WACA Ground Final.

Meantime, Peel Blue were crowned premiers of the top female division, outpointing Bunbury Red by 10 wickets at Stan Twight Reserve.

The men’s final proved a fitting conclusion to a fiercely contested week.

Batting first, Busselton-Margaret River posted 206, anchored by a match-defining innings from Ajith Sandaruwan Rajapaksha, whose 97-ball 70 earned him Player of the Final honours.

Albany fought hard in reply as number four Buddy Robinson (49 from 59) dug in, but a disciplined bowling display led by captain Fraser Oates (3-21) and Rory Calhoun (3-39) ensured Busselton-Margaret River stayed ahead of the game.

Other CSBP Senior Men's Country Week champions included Esperance (B-section), Port Hedland (C-section), Eastern Goldfields (D-section) and Upper Great Southern (E-section), while Albany finished on top of the F-section ladder.

In CSBP Women's Country Week, Peel Blue and Bunbury Red were the benchmark sides throughout the tournament, losing only to each other.

Peel, however, emerged on top in the match that mattered most, running down the 105-run target undefeated in 14.4 overs thanks to the efforts of openers Olivia McSweeney (60no from 70) and Emily Jacobs (22no from 33).

The B-section competition was taken out in style by the Busselton-Margaret River Cricket Association Allstars, who enjoyed the spoils of devastating spells from opening bowlers Imogen King (5-2 from four overs) and Hannah Bredenkamp (4-0 from three overs) in the final. Bredenkamp added an unbeaten 36 with the bat, as the Allstars triumphed by 104 runs at Stan Twight Reserve.
