Mitchell Marsh will call time on his Sheffield Shield career at the end of the 2025-26 domestic summer, announcing the news to WA teammates last night following their clash with Victoria at the MCG.
Mitchell Marsh to Retire from Sheffield Shield Cricket at Season’s End
An 18-year-old Marsh first pulled on the Baggy Black on home turf against New South Wales in November 2009, playing the first of many red-ball matches alongside brother Shaun. Now 34, he will sign off from Sheffield Shield cricket after 16 years at the WACA Ground as one of the state’s most popular and destructive players.
Reflecting on his journey, Marsh said he felt immense gratitude for the opportunity to represent Western Australia.
"It has been an honour to play Sheffield Shield cricket for WA," he said.
"Right now I am deeply committed to the group and the Scorchers. Playing for WA has been a huge part of my life and I plan to give back in any way possible long into the future."
Powerful with the bat and crafty at the bowling crease, Marsh accumulated 2,744 runs and 82 wickets in 55 Shield matches, continuing his family’s celebrated association with WA Cricket.
Marsh also skippered WA in 16 Sheffield Shield games between 2017 and 2023 for seven wins, four losses and five draws before handing the reins to long-term teammate Sam Whiteman.
Although his availability has been limited by international commitments, Marsh has remained a central figure of the WA dressing room.
WA Head Coach Adam Voges said Marsh’s contribution to WA Cricket has been profound across his 16-year career.
"Mitch embodies everything about what it means to be a Sheffield Shield player for Western Australia.
“From playing alongside him to coaching him in more recent times, he’s given his all for his state.
“It’s been a privilege to watch him progress from Sheffield Shield to being a successful international cricketer for Australia.
“He’s an outstanding character on and off the field and it’s been a pleasure to play a part in his journey.”
Australia's white ball captain, Marsh remains open to playing Test cricket.
