When Western Australia’s squad was announced for its opening two games of the One-Day Cup campaign, few could’ve predicted Will Malajczuk’s name to feature.
Malajczuk Making The Most Of One-Day Cup Experience
Malajczuk was named in the 14-man squad for the games against Queensland and South Australia last Thursday, just five days short of his 18th birthday.
His selection came off the back of strong pre-season form in the WA men’s intra-squad matches and was a part of the victorious U19 team in last year’s National Championships.
Already bound for Queensland for Australia’s Under-19 series against India’s U19 side, Malajczuk said he was enjoying the whirlwind start to the season.
“It was excitement to start when I was selected, but once I’ve got around the squad it’s all become a bit of a blur,” he said.
“I’m trying to take every day as it comes and enjoy my time being around the group because they are great to be around.
“It’s been great getting to spend time with the experienced guys in the squad and help me improve my game.”
Malajczuk was an important contributor in WA’s Under-19 side last season, scoring 164 runs at 27.33, with only Simon Budge (346 runs) and Adam Solomons (190) ahead of him.
His off spin also proved more than handy throughout the tournament, taking six wickets at 14.67.
Malajczuk struck 337 runs at 84.25 in the U17 National Championships earlier this year, highlighted by a devastating 131 off 74 balls against New South Wales Country in the third-place playoff.
The left-hander said a star South African wicketkeeper-batter, also capable of reeling off runs in quick time, was a player he paid close attention to.
“I wouldn’t say I model my game on Quinton De Kock, but he’s one who I like the look of when he’s at the crease,” he said.
“He’s a clean striker and timer of the ball and has a clean bat swing.
“It’s going to put me in a good spot if I can take a bit from his game.”
The Subiaco-Floreat product will be hoping the last week is a sign of things to come for the remainder of season 2025-26.
As well as current duties with WA and Australia’s U19 side, Malajczuk said he was excited at what the rest of the season could hold in store, highlighted by the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup early in the New Year.
“It’s all come pretty fast for me so far this season,” he said.
“Hopefully there will be a few more exciting things coming up for the rest of it too.
“I’m looking forward to Premier Cricket starting and hopefully the World Cup.”
