Three Potential Debutants In ODC Openers Squad

WA could have up to three debutants in Sunday’s first One-Day Cup match of season 2025-26, two of whom could wear state colours for the first time.

Looking to bounce back after just two wins from seven games last season, WA starts the new season against Queensland at Allan Border Field, before a clash with reigning champion South Australia at Karen Rolton Oval on Wednesday.

Will Malajczuk and Albert Esterhuysen could play for WA for the first time, if selected, on Sunday, while Teague Wyllie is also in the mix to make his 50-over debut for the state.

Despite not having a state contract, Malajczuk’s form through recent pre-season practice matches only enhanced his case to be selected in the 14-man squad.

The 17-year-old is also a part of the Australian U19 side to take on the India U19 side in a series which gets underway in Brisbane on Sunday as well.

Exciting quick Esterhuysen featured in four matches in the Perth Scorchers Academy’s victorious Top End T20 campaign last month and performed well in the intra-squad games.

While Wyllie has been a familiar face around WA’s Sheffield Shield side in recent seasons, he’s yet to play in the shortened format for his state.

Ashton Turner will captain in the 50-over format again in season 2025-26.

Turner is joined in the squad by fellow experienced players Ashton Agar, Cameron Bancroft, Hilton Cartwright, Matt Kelly, Joel Paris and Sam Whiteman.

Joel Curtis, Sam Fanning and fast bowling duo Bryce Jackson and Liam Haskett round out the squad.

WA’s games first two games will be broadcast on Kayo and Cricket.com.au with the first ball scheduled for 12:00PM on Sunday and 8:30AM on Wednesday.
