Connolly, Rocchiccioli Shine In Strong Two-Day Hit-Out At The WACA

A composed century from Cooper Connolly and a six-wicket haul to off-spinner Corey Rocchiccioli headlined a productive two-day intrasquad clash for the WA Men’s team at the WACA Ground this week, as preparations ramp up for the summer ahead.

Connolly was once again among the standout performers, continuing his fine pre-season form with a commanding unbeaten 103 off 165 balls on the opening day. The 22-year-old showed impressive concentration and stroke play throughout his innings, further underlining his credentials with the bat.

Sam Fanning also looked confident at the crease and compiled a patient and well-crafted 89 from 184 deliveries. The left-hander soaked up pressure early before expanding his stroke play, anchoring the top order.

Fast bowler Matt Kelly also made a strong impression with the bat, finishing day one on 51 not out from just 52 balls, including several fluent strokes late in the day. Wicketkeeper-batter Joel Curtis chipped in with a brisk 32 from 33 balls, backing up his impressive white-ball form from the week prior.

With the ball, experienced left-armer Joel Paris led the way on Day 1, picking up 3-38 from 13 disciplined overs. Cameron Gannon also chipping in and producing handy figures of (1-37 from 16).

Day two saw a shift in momentum as all-rounder Cameron Green made his presence felt with an authoritative 93 off 95 balls, showcasing his power game with a mix of timing and aggression.

Joel Paris capped off a strong all-round performance with a gritty 56* from 92 deliveries in the lower order, while Sam Whiteman (48 off 74), Teague Wyllie (47 off 55), and Baxter Holt (35 off 59) all enjoyed valuable time in the middle.

The bowling honours on Day 2 belonged to off-spinner Corey Rocchiccioli, who finished with figures of 6-94 from 25.2 overs. His control and subtle variations proved too much, particularly in the middle session. Matt Kelly was once again economical, finishing with 1-30 from 15 tight overs.

The two-day contest provided key match fitness and tactical insight for players and coaches alike as the squad eyes a strong start to the 2025-26 season.

WA will kick off their red-ball campaign shortly after the One-Day Cup opener against Queensland on Sunday 21 September at Allan Border Field.
