Brilliant Bancroft Claims Top Domestic Gong

Star WA batter Cameron Bancroft has been recognised by his peers ahead of tonight’s 2024 Australian Cricket Awards, crowned Domestic Player of the Year following an outstanding 2022-23 campaign.

The gritty opener was prolific across all formats, guiding WA to their second successive Marsh Sheffield Shield and Marsh One-Day Cup titles.

These efforts earned him his second Laurie Sawle Medal – WA Cricket’s most prestigious male accolade.

Bancroft amassed a competition-high 945 runs at 59.06 from 11 Shield games, including four centuries.

His determination at the crease was highlighted by the 2,102 deliveries he faced – 664 more than nearest rival, South Australian Daniel Drew.

In 50-over cricket, Bancroft flourished atop the order with 327 runs at 65.40.

Among his more telling contributions was the 90 Bancroft struck during the One-Day Cup decider on home turf against the Redbacks, paving the way for WA to pile on 7-387.

Bancroft, now contracted to Sydney Thunder, was equally influential during Perth Scorchers’ memorable BBL|12 championship, hammering 357 runs at 51 from 11 innings.

The 31-year-old was “honoured” to receive the player-voted award, earned previously by several greats of WA Cricket.

“Shaun Marsh and Adam Voges have won this award and what it represented for them was a lot of hard work, dedication, and commitment,” Bancroft said.

“They’re two guys who I aspired to be like growing up, and they demonstrate what being successful in domestic cricket is all about. I know for me, personally, I’ve tried to take those lessons into my own game.

“It’s nice to have been represented by my peers to have played really good cricket, and it’s a nice stepping stone for me to progress and achieve what I want to achieve in this game.”

Bancroft has continued his superb form in 2023-24 and shapes as a key pillar of WA’s quest to secure the unprecedented One-Day Cup and Sheffield Shield three-peat.
